The World Architecture Day

Dedicated to Giancarlo

The World Architecture Day which is traditionally held by the UIA on the first Monday of October, this year will have a particular subject and place , as the UIA decided during the last meeting of the World Congress in Turin 2008. The theme will be “Architecture and children” from the song written by our recently deceased colleague Giancarlo Ius, and – among the different events all over the world – the place is the town of Pordenone where Giancarlo used to live and work.
The Day will take place in two different locations in the town. A meeting about “Children will build the future” will be held at the Congress Hall of the City Fair; different experts will speak about different Italian and international experiences. A round table with the title “Big ideas from small citizens” will follow: an exchange of ideas about the results of the participation of the children in the planning of our towns, about the relations between architects and children needs; different experiences undergone in Germany and in Italy, in particular in Bolzano, Reggio Emilia, Pordenone and other towns in Veneto.
The second part of the Day will be held in the historic centre of the city, something like a “città dei bambini e delle bambine” where different workshops with children from the schools of Pordenone and the young boys and girls from the Children City Council will take place.
Some other events of which our colleague Giancarlo was working at trying to bring to a conclusion, will develop during the day: the opening of a sculpture exhibition with the title “L' tra natura e utopia” and the performance of the song “Child be the architect” already presented during the world Congress in Torino 2008.
During the day an ideal thread will connect a series of broken off thoughts, and we'll try to bring to an end those ideas that were leading Giancarlo Ius to become president of the world order of architects .
Our many thanks to everybody who is working together with us in order to organize this Day in such a few time since the death of Giancarlo Ius: our Colleagues, the people from UIA, in particular the president Louise Cox and the past president Gaetan Siew, the CNAPPC, the” Coordinamento degli ordini provinciali del triveneto”, the “Federazione del Friuli Venezia Giulia” and the “Ordine Provinciale di Pordenone”, and to all the organizations and the institutions which gave us such a great co-operation; an enthusiasm which let us know how people moved by ideals, by energy can leave their indelible impression; an impression which brings in itself the capability to create moreso in the future.
